Twenty Random Facts.

Posted by Aura Charisse on October 5, 2014 at 2:50 AM Comments comments (0)

Tagged & ready to shoot. My turn to give out twenty facts about myself:

1. Name's Aura Charisse. You can call me Aura, Auwie or Charisse. Even Tish, my family nickname, is fine. :)

2. Twenty and loving life

3. The most important thing in my life right now is to be a genuinely happy and positive being! I was born with a choleric temperament. My parents used to tell me that when I was born, I was the only frowning infant in the nursery. I was the only chinky, chubby baby with those angry, wrinkled eyebrows. I won't even deny the fact that I'm choleric and that I have anger issues but one thing's for sure: I'm driving all my efforts to improve that aspect. :) I try my hardest to stop being angry and pessimistic about life!

4. I wear my mood. What I'm feeling on a particular day is extended through my outfits. If I'm feeling happy, you'd probably see me in a dress, a skirt or something colorful. If I'm feeling exhausted, you'd see me wearing something dark colored or loose. If I'm feeling indifferent, I'd go for bold monochromatic colors with unique details. It really all depends. ;)

5. I literally cannot stand hunger. I always have to have my food. Always. I need a constant supply of food, no matter how little the proportion. If I'm hungry, I get cranky and moody. I get #hangry! I must always have my food to stay in a good mood. Also, I don't like skipping meals just because it's unhealthy and it messes up with my metabolism. I totally sound like a food hoarder right now but whatever, I love food, don't you?

6. I'm girly... Painfully girly! Growing up, I was trained by my mom to be prim and proper. She always made sure I'm decent and ladylike. She always paid much attention to my posture, my etiquette and my fashion. Dresses, lace socks, stockings, and ballet shoes define my childhood #ootd. Other than that, I also came from an all girl school and my all time favorite color is pink!

7. I grew up a dancer. I've danced a variety of genres (even Hawaiian hula dancing lol!) but I started with ballet at age 3 in a little purple tutu. I've had dancing breaks in the past but right now I'm back on my feet. I'm training regularly in dance again. It feel goods to be back on the dance floor and to dream with my feet once more!

8. I love Youtube. I'm an avid viewer of vlogs. According to rank, my favorite Youtube vloggers are: Jenn Im, Anna Akana, Claire Marshall & Bethany Mota. It's amazing how you can get new knowledge from watching short videos that are nothing but creative! You should definitely go check them out. :) Jenn Im vlogs about fashion. Her style is incredible and every outfit is stunning! Claire Marshall, on the other hand, vlogs mostly about makeup and different beauty products. She's the expert on all things makeup. Now, if you're in the mood for something witty and funny, I highly recommend Anna Akana's channel. Every episode will crack you up, for sure. If you're particularly girly and DIY-oriented, Bethany Mota's channel is perfect for you! #motafam I'm sure you guys will enjoy their videos --- they're Youtube famous for a reason!

9. I have naturally uneven eyebrows. My left brow is higher than the right. Hahaha, it's just really like that.

10. My family is my everything. I love them very much! They've constantly been my support system from the very beginning but more than that, they've stayed with me in all my troubles and phases.

11. I also love my friends very much! Shoutout to Julia Victoria, Serra Nicole, Fallen Grace, Rhonnareen & Alberto! And Trina & Yna, of course!

12. Two phobias: snakes & falling. I always say this, fear of falling is different from fear of heights. You can place me in a highly elevated location and I'll be good, even if you place me in a glass box on Mt. Everest! As long as you secure me that I won't fall it's not a problem. It's a completely different thing if you place me on a thin ledge that's positioned on a steep cliff!

13. I value conversations. For me it's very important to converse well in maintaining good lasting friendships. Talk and LISTEN to what others have to say and create that bond of friendship with people. :) If I can't have a single decent conversation with you, it just won't do. Conversing should be a reciprocal social transaction. I want to be able to get to know you as much I want you to get to know me. I want to be able to listen to your stories as much as I want you to hear mine. Connection is key! :)

14. I have very poor vision. My sense of sight has to rely on thick prescription glasses and clear contact lenses. Without either, I'm practically blind. Even with contacts on, sometimes it still gets difficult to see at night. So please be forgiving with me if I don't recognize you right away!

15. I'm in love with classical piano music. It's so uplifting to listen to! My favorite composers are Frédéric Chopin and Ludovico Einaudi. To my friend John, I'm still really thankful that you introduced Ludovico Einaudi's music to me!

16. I'm taking up a course that is insanely sadistic and evil but I love it nevertheless because it really trains you well as a student! I'm taking BS Biology as my pre-med and I'm already a senior! #biofeels

17. I grew up with my grandparents and I'm deeply grateful for that. I feel privileged to have been able to spend my childhood with them and to still have them in our lives today. It's wonderful to learn from them and to hear the stories of their time. I love them very much!

18. Favorite animal? LION FOR SURE.

19. In preschool, I broke my seatmate's finger. Literally. I broke the bone. My parents had to get my classmate to surgery to have it fixed. He's a boy, btw. My bad.

20. I have a birthmark shaped like the Philippine islands on my inner thigh. Yes, you read that right. How unusual, I know!

I orginally posted this on my Instagram then I realized, why not put it up on the blog as well? SIncerely hoping that this was fun for you to read and that this blogger isn't so much of a stranger to you anymore. :) I TAG Nix from Lost Girl Chronicles ! :) Go check out her blog because it's absolutely perfect! Have a great long weekend!

P.S. Do you like my new banner? :)

Would You Rather Beauty Tag

Posted by Aura Charisse on September 27, 2014 at 10:45 PM Comments comments (0)

LET'S TALK BEAUTY. Thoughts and opinions on makeup, nails and hair! Here's a little fun tag for y'all to read! :)

1.) Would you rather lose all of your mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks, and lipglosses or lose all of your palettes and eyeshadows?

I'd much rather lose everything else than my palettes and eyeshadows. I'm deeply dependent on my makeup palettes. Losing them would kill me. Like. I'm. Not. Even. Kidding. Take away everything else just not my palettes! They mean the world to me when it comes to makeup simply because I always go for the heavy eyeshadow look. Heavy eye makeup + nude lip is my kind of look.

2.) Would you rather chop off all your hair or never be able to cut it again?

Chop it all off! As much as I love my long hair, I'd much rather have it chopped all off than never be able to cut it again. At least that way, I can still control the length of my hair. I can't rock the Rapunzel look for the rest of my life! And I've actually done this before. Thrice. I've already chopped my hair from very long to very short. Even as short as pixie boy cut! Yes you read that right, Aura Charisse had boy cut hair! YUP. I'd rather have that than have infinitely long, unmanageable, tangled hair.

3.) Would you rather have a coral cheek or a pink cheek?

CORAL. Definitely. I'm in love with coral when it comes to lip and cheek products. I think coral is a really nice accent to the neutral colors of everyday makeup. And most of the time I avoid pink for those products for fear of looking overly pink. My favorite color has always been pink so chances are my things are already screaming pink --- accessories, bags, shoes, etc. I wouldn't want to overdo the pink passion by applying pink makeup as well!

4.) If you had $1000 to spend, would you rather buy clothes or makeup?

Clothes. Lots of beautifully tailored clothes with exquisite material. Yes, that would be heavenly. And how ironic it is that I chose clothes over makeup when this is a beauty tag!

5.) Would you rather apply lipstick as eyeliner, or eyeliner as lipstick?

... This one's difficult cause you'll look horrible either way!! Hmm, I guess I'd go with eyeliner as lipstick, as long as the eyeliner I'm using is metallic and cream based so at least it's similar to lip gloss. ;)

6.) Would you rather only shop at MAC or Sephora?

I know everyone would expect you to answer MAC because MAC products are just to die for but I'd actually go for Sephora. Sephora has a variety of makeup brands so you're not just limited to one. I think it's better to be able to experiment with different brands and products rather than be confined to just one brand. Sephora has Make Up For Ever, Givenchy, Urban Decay, Marc Jacobs, Shiseido, Dior, Tarte, Too Faced, Bare Minerals, Benefit, and TONS MORE. It wouldn't hurt to shop at MAC but Sephora is like the shopping heaven for all things beauty.

7.) Would you rather only use one eyeshadow color or one lip color for the rest of your life?

One lip color. I'm obsessed with makeup palettes and I love experimenting with the different shades of eyeshadow. Using only one eyeshadow color just wouldn't do. And the thing is, using only one color is rarely a successful look because in applying eyeshadow, you mix and blend in together different colors to give you that enhanced eye look. One color is just too limiting.

8.) Would you rather wear winter clothes in summer or summer clothes in winter?

Winter clothes in summer. When it comes to extremes, I prefer heat more than cold just because my body is more adapted to warmth. I'm very sensitive to the cold. I can easily get sick from really low temperatures and I can go on for days without the use of fans or airconditioning.

9.) Would you rather have dark nails or bright nails all year round?

Dark muted colors. Bright nails are just too eye catching and distracting for me, especially if it doesn't complement your OOTD. :(

10.) Would you rather give up your favorite lip product or your favorite eye product?

I'd definitely sacrifice my favorite lip product over my favorite eye product. For me, eyes are everything in make up and even when make up isn't the context, I'm a firm believer that eyes truly are the window to one's soul. Eyes speak for you. Wouldn't it be better if you enhance that by making your eyes extra pleasing and making them the center of attention?

11.) Would you rather only be able to wear your hair in a ponytail or a messy bun?

High ponytail! I've always been a high ponytail gal. Since childhood and even until now, I honestly still enjoy playing with my pontytail and make it bounce and sway side by side. No shame! It really is such a childish amusement for me. Other than that, I can't really rock the messy bun look or any messy look in general. My style is really more polished in anything.

12.) Would your rather never be able to paint your nails again or never use lipgloss?

Never be able to paint your nails again. Just because I'm completely fine with having bare nails. :)

13.) Would you rather shave your eyebrows and have none at all or sharpie them in everyday?

SHAVE MY EYEBROWS.

I know absolutely NOTHING about eyebrow lining. Once I attempted to draw my eyebrows in, lo and behold, it was such an EPIC FAIL. I don't know why but I just felt like a professional makeup artist that day, which I'm absolutely NOT because I painfully failed at this. It was disastrous! I literally looked like I came from broadway wearing such thick stage makeup --- if you didn't know, stage make up is insanely thick and not meant to be seen up close. You should've seen my family's reaction when I went out with those fail eyebrows. They were literally frightened by my witch brows that I immediately had to erase them! How fail was that? I was already using make up that time, what more if I use sharpie every single day of my life?!

14.) Would you rather live without makeup or nail polish?

This one's a no brainer. I can totally live without nail polish! Don't get me wrong, I love mani and pedi. I love the look of pretty, clean-cut, perfectly polished nails. I love that you can apply a variety of colors on your nails. I love having my nails done and feeling so classy with nude mani but, the thing is, I'M SUCH A CLEAN FREAK. In the past, when I regularly had my nails done, I would always feel so paranoid about dirt, bacteria and any other foreign residue getting into my nails. I always had to sanitize the underside of my nails with alcohol, make sure I wash my hands thoroughly, clean the edges once the polish starts to chip, etc. That was just too high maintenance for me for something that I wasn't completely comfortable with. I had this phase for a while until I realized the mani-pedi craze just wasn't for me.

WHY MISS UNDERSTOOD?

Posted by Aura Charisse on September 5, 2014 at 9:25 PM Comments comments (5)

Let's take a break from the visuals and focus on something more substantial.

Since the launch of this blog, I've been receiving tons of questions which, quite honestly, aren't that easy to response to simply because crafting something as boundless as your own blog comes with a lot of hidden corners and swerves. With that, I mean to say that there are plenty of complications to discuss, which I don't think I can condense into a quick casual chat because the totality of the process is something I value. Readers may only perceive the face value of a particular blog post but to the blogger, there are many sides to it --- this is where the task of innovating, creating, perfecting and toiling comes in. Nevertheless, the flood of questions makes me BEYOND excited! I love it when you ask. :) These questions help me grow this blog in a way that is much more significant and relevant to my readers. :)

In this post, allow me to indulge in every reader's curiosity as I answer this profound question:

Simple. Because I'm misunderstood. I'm not one who is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of person. If you don't get me and my personality, I don't blame you at all. I like to believe that I'm a highly complicated, versatile and unpredictable person with many facets in life. My personality is no plain sail. I'm a deeply complex person with a reasonable number of gray areas in my life. Though I'm a firm believer that no personality can be confined in a box, I think some people are more easily understood than others. And I belong to that group of others who are more easily misunderstood. In short, my life is basically a prejudice. I've been living my life in the shadows of judgment.

People think I'm way too serious about life. Truth? I find that life is a great gift filled with endless opportunities to grow and learn. Learning is an unending process. I don't believe in wasting away because every second counts and one can never know when the last existing day is --- might as well live like you’re dying.

People think I'm aloof. Truth? I'm a reserved introvert who would rather be approached than approach people. It takes time for me to be comfortable with people and more so to trust people. If I'm comfortable to be myself around you (which means being completely weird and insane) and give you my trust, that says a lot.

People think I’m demanding. Truth? I’m a meticulous person who seeks perfection in quality and value.

People think I sugarcoat. Truth? I shower people with compliments because I believe it's important to let someone feel appreciation and to simply make their day with something as mundane as a kind gesture. You don’t know what battle a person is going through. Be a sweet and make that person smile in the midst of his trials. I give compliments when it’s due.

People think I created this blog to get attention. Truth? I created this blog as a curative outlet because for the longest time I've been pinned down by society's prejudice. Growing up, I've always developed this irrational fear of being judged. It was always my goal to please everybody else --- and I mean it when I say everybody. It became very detrimental to my person as I've developed this paranoia from opinions and criticisms that I was literally paralyzed. A huge part of my life was consecrated to fitting in the norm and to be like everybody else. It was a toxic disease that turned me into a very unhappy, angry and regretful being.

Time finally came when I just stopped giving a damn about what other people think. It's my life. Why should I seek approval from others in everything I do? I realized that I just want to be happy --- truly and genuinely happy --- by being myself and not allowing other people to control my life. It's a most beautiful thing when you find balance in both your passions and priorities. It's a most fulfilling thing when you realize you're living your life that way you want it to be. It's a most granting thing when you realize you're able to make people smile with what you love doing. :)

I no longer find shame in being a misunderstood person. In fact, as time goes by, I’m beginning to realize that being misunderstood can be a beautiful asset to a person. :) It just means you are multifaceted --- you are not boring! From that notion, I decided to transform that ball of negative energy into something radiantly positive, something that will not only help me grow as a person but will hopefully, inspire others to be true to themselves as well. I branded myself as Miss Understood as I accepted and embraced the fact that not everyone can understand me. I used it as my driving force to keep living life in a most fulfilling way. Judgment is inevitable. :) Also, it's a fun play on words, don't you think?

I chose to grow Miss Understood as a fashion blog because fashion grants us the chance to express ourselves without letting judgment be a barrier. In fashion, we can dress up to feel more confident, to know ourselves more, and to ultimately extend our personalities through pieces of clothing.

I dress this way because it makes me happy. I dress this way because I’m comfortable. I dress this way because why not?

P.S. Now you know I didn't misspell misunderstood! ;)

Launch updates.

Starting this blog has been an incredible challenge: From dropping my Nikon lens to having a malfunctioning DSLR, I had to deal with having nothing reliable to shoot with. From having many failed shoots to not having a shoot at all, I now own a folder of fail shots that I will never upload. This is extremely a crucial process because the results of these shoots will be the very content of my blog. From using a digital camera with horrible quality to losing the charger of another digital camera, it totally beats the purpose for finding two digital cameras at home because both are absolute crap. :( From having problems and confusions with the file formats to having a photoshop program that wasn't cooperating with me, I had to research, suffer nosebleed from so many technical photography terms (hehe) and re-install a new program that would be willing to cooperate. From having writer's block to being a techie noob, it was increasingly frustrating to layout and design the website when you know you're merely feeling the waters and trying out something you're no expert of.

In the end, it was a battle in my mind that I had to face: do I really want to launch this blog or not? And I do. I still do! I still really want to push through with this, despite all those hindrances. I didn't want to succumb to defeat, simply because no one can really pursue my dream other than myself. Lo and behold, the launch was achieved and it was, if I may say so, quite a success! Yay! :)

The launch of Miss Understood has been great. I have personally been receiving an overwhelming number of responses. It has been flooding with good jobs, proud of yous, keep it ups, etc. from many people and I'm entirely thankful for the heartfelt feedback. I would like to share some of them with you:

"I love it!"

"Great posts on Miss Understood."

"Nicely written! Finally, a blogger with good grammar."

"It's awesome! I really do hope this spreads because I'm sure ladies would find this helpful and interesting."

"I'm so proud of you! Love your blog. So professional! I'm not saying this because I'm biased. It's a pretty good read. My friend read it too."

"I specifically like Backyard Style because you didn't only talk about the outfit but shopping online as well, which is great. It's informative, helpful, but still very personal to you because you talked about your experience. And I like the outfit  because it's very classy."

"I was reading your blog last night and I loved how you modernized that old childhood skirt. I guess a real fashionista, no matter how old, how ugly or how out of the trend a clothing is, she can still mix and match it and make it look beautiful and fashionable. Two thumbs up for you!"

"Such a classy site!! And it's so Aura, down to the pink swirly heart on top! I enjoyed reading your work as usual and I enjoyed looking at your photos even more! I don't read much blogs, but this already looks a lot for the opening! So proud and happy for you girl!"

THANK YOU. I extend my gratitude to every single person who has helped me launch this blog, to friends who have been supportive and helped me spread the word by sharing on social networks, and to all those who took the time to visit the blog and read the posts. All of you are part of the success of the launch. Thank you so much!

Keep reading! I deeply wish that you would look forward to more of Miss Understood and I sincerely hope that you stay with me in this journey. :)

P.S. I would love to hear from you! Really! Don't hesitate to drop a message by clicking the Contact tab. Or you can just simply comment in any of my posts under the Blog section. :)

Ten quick facts

Posted by Aura Charisse on May 18, 2014 at 8:00 PM Comments comments (0)

I'm posting this just because I don't want you guys to be reading some blog of a random stranger --- I don't know if it's just me but I would totally feel uncomfortable reading a blog of an anon (or maybe I'm just weird...). So in a way, let me "introduce" myself with these ten quick facts about myself. Happy read!

ONE. I am deeply, incredibly, sincerely in love with the 50's --- the fashion, the music, the people, everything. This great love for the 50's all goes back to my childhood. I was influenced by my beloved grandfather when I was younger as he would continuously play music from the 50's. Instantly, I fell in love with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. I'm also a great admirer of Edith Piaf, Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, and most definitely, Audrey Hepburn, who is the epitome of beauty and perfection.

TWO. I'm a very awkward person in truth!

THREE. My all-time favorite film is The Devil Wears Prada. Oh my goodness, I truly adore this film. Everything about it is my cup of tea but basically what I ultimately love about the film is Andy's impeccable character and her terrific journey. Not to mention the fab outfits!

FOUR. Unfortunately, I have extremely poor vision. I suffer from myopia and slight astigmatism. I hate wearing glasses though. I hate how my thick and heavy lenses are uncomfortable to wear... and also how they make me look like a little granny! Contact lenses are much more convenient for me.

FIVE. I LOVE BOOKS. So much! I love the idea of being able to travel to different places through the creativity of tales, archetypes, cultures, characters, etc. I LOVE having realizations brought by the ingenuity of the literature and the prowess of the author. Books are such wonders to me.

SIX. Art is a great part of my life. I grew up with an artist for a sister. It was our childhood hobby to draw and paint together, though having different styles and techniques. A priced skill of mine is being able to create various kinds of ink art from plain, undistinguished materials. I'm also very much fond of performing arts, specifically dance.

SEVEN. I have the attention span of a deer under headlights, as much as --- look a bird --- I'd hate to admit.

EIGHT. The definition of my mind is overthinking. This is the number one thing which I both appreciate and abhor about myself. It's a gift to have the ability to think about philosophical and significant matters, yet it's also quite a dear burden to always be thinking about everything and anything, to the point that I get consumed with great paranoia and negativity. It's because of this fact that I get very lucid dreams frequently. Hence, an unusually exhausted self upon waking up from slumber... Such an inconvenience.

NINE. Sour is my favorite taste. In desserts, viands, candies, drinks. Shoutout to those who fancy warheads as much as I do!

TEN. Thoughts about life after death? A dancing soul in the heavens. Definitely.

Meet the blogger

Posted by Aura Charisse on May 17, 2014 at 4:45 AM Comments comments (0)

Twenteen lady seeking refuge in her own Tiffany's, a passion-filled realm of arts & grace where everything shines more brilliantly.

The name's Aura Charisse. I grew up an artist, a dancer, a writer and in every cliche way, a dreamer. Devoted to the humanities, in love with books and history, I'm one who is fervent with life and the everyday journeys of people. Though sometimes mistaken for being too serious, I confess I am childlike, silly, impulsive and unpredictable. There are many facets to my very being which I would very much like to share with eager readers.

Here is a blog where I shall indite my whereabouts, whether they may be on meticulous fashion, spontaneous travels, ardent opinions, etc. I guess this blog basically exists as an extension of my craft, thoughts, adventures and ultimately, myself, though probably focusing more on fashion --- a new field which I have decided to wander in.

In many ways, I'm attracted to the idea of putting different pieces together to create a unified look that both encompasses one's style and personality. Fashion is such a vast world where you can just get lost and have fun creating art! Yet, let me tell you now, that I am, at the moment, no fashion student, expert or whatsoever. I'm simply the little girly-girl who loves playing dress up. I'm merely one who tries to experiment with different styles. I'm humbly a novice who is more than willing to learn. Though not an expert, I give you my word that I shall give my best and not disappoint.

Let this blog be an empty canvas for a hopeful fashionista.

Explore the site and enjoy the posts. I hope you'll find delight in this blog which I have crafted. :) Carpe diem!
